ABOUT US
Biorem members are students of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, interested in research on sustainable management of environment, natural resources & wastes and wastewaters. Our research projects are focused on understanding microbial communities and their interactions in bioenergy systems fed with animal manure and as well in plant rhizosphere and fruit development, bioconcrete & bioremediation of aromatic compounds, arsenic and other contaminants using metagenomcis and metatranscriptomic tools. Our students work in collaboration with Dr. Ricardo Oropeza Navarro, Instituto Biotecnología de la UNAM, Dr. Teodoro Espinosa Solares, Universidad Autónoma Chapingo, Dr. Francisco J. Cervantes Carrillo, IPICyT, Dr. Umesh Reddy, Dr. David Huber, West Virginia State University, USA, Dr. Matt Vijayan, University of Calgary, Canada, apart from scientists of our University at Saltillo and Torreón campuses.

Dr. Nagamani Balagurusamy

Completed Ph.D. (1996) on Environmental Sciences with specialisation on Environmental Microbiology from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu State, India. Working as Full time Professor at Autonomous University of Coahuila, Coahuila State, Mexico since September 2001 and at Faculty of Biological Sciences of Autonomous University of Coahuila since January 2007.

Sara Hernández Martínez

She finished her studies on Biochemical engineering in 2012. Her research area was Bioconcret where achieved to isolate bacterial strains from the soil of Comarca Lagunera capable of producing urease enzyme. Actually, she is working at Comercializadora Farmacéutica de México. S.A. de C.V. (COFARMESA) as responsible to develop new projects.

Lilia Ernestina Montañez Hernández
Ph.D student
Lilia was a biorem master degree mate working on expresion of mcrA gene and coenzyme F420. Currently, Lilia is doing her P.h.D. in South Dakota University, USA.
Jóse Alberto Silva Gónzalez
Master degree student
Currently working on design and optimization of biogas energy systems through the use of software. His current project focus on the evaluation of different strategies to achieve the multi-criteria goal of maximize both economic rentability and the reduction of environmental impact of biogas energy systems. His tesis work apply the refinery approach to biogas systems evaluating novel technological updates to produce biogas derived marketable products as biomethane and organic fertilizer.
Alejandra Alvarado
Ph.D
Ale worked on evaluating the bio-methantion potential of cow manure in her Bachelors degree at Biorem lab, later she continued her master degree on West Virginia State University and then complated her Ph.D in Max Planck Institute for Microbiology. Now she is working in Tübingen University in Germany.

Emmanuel Chavarria
M.Sc.
He studied Biochemical Engineering at Autonomous University of Coahuila being member of Biorem, and a postgraduate degree in Biotechnology at West Virginia State University (WVSU). Actually, he works in an environmental microbiology laboratory where they investigate microbial ecology in natural environments. His work at WVSU is multidisciplinary technician, he also advises students and scientists to improve their research projects.

Natalia Montenegro
M.Sc.
She started in scientific research during the bachelor's degree as part of the biorem lab. Afterwards, she completed her Masters in Biotechnology at West Virginia State University (WVSU) and it is in the same university where she now works as an Associate Researcher in Microbial Biotechnology. She study microbial ecology in anaerobic digesters as model systems. One of the most satisfying parts of her job is to be able to advise and pass on knowledge to undergraduate and masters students who are just starting out in research.

Emilio Nafarrate Rivera
MS.
Emilio was a master's degree biorem mate around 2012, his work was about the evaluation of phases of Anaerobic Digestion using fruits and vegetables. Currently, He is working in an important regional food industry contributing in the development of its products.

Eliab Misael Gonzalez Olvera
M.Sc.
In 2011 he started his Masters degree in Biochemical Engineering with a specialty on Environmental Biotechnology in biorem lab where he analyzed the correlation between methanogenic activity and fluorescence intensity of methanogenic strains under different growth conditions. He has worked as Biology, Physics and Microbiology teacher at several universities. Currenlty, he is doing a PhD at FCQ UJED.

Monserrat Atilano
M.Sc.
Actually, she is studying a master's degree in Sustainable Process at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Her research area is focus on water treatment and environmental biotechnology. Specifically, her work is about optimization of the production of laccase enzymes in an airlift reactor and their use on the degradation occurring in wastewater.

Melissa C. Hermosillo Alba
M.Sc.
She studied Chemical Engineering at Technological Institute of Laguna (2001-2006) and she obtained her master’s degree on Biochemical Engineering at Faculty of Biological Science of Autonomous University of Coahuila (2010-2012). She is a professor at Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro since 2012 teaching clases of enivonmental chemistry I and II, quantitative analysis and biochemistry. She is also principal researcher “B” of part time.

Carlos Eloir López Ortiz
Ph.D student
His work comprises the understanding of soils and water contamined with arsenic, its remotion with plants and the different microbial detoxification mechanisms. He is actually in West Virginia State University doing his P.h.D. and continue with his research, doing metagenomic studies of soil rich in arsenic.

Marleny García Lozano
Ph.D student
She is working on gene expression and microbial diversity in biodigesters installed in our community employing Bioinformatic analyses, in order to understand the biological process carried out by the different microbial groups in anaerobic systems.

Mónica María Cruz Santos
Ph.D student
She is working anaerobic co-digestion process with different Comarca Lagunera waste as: barn manure, aloe vera and soto bagasse for methane production.
Yadira Peña García
Ph.D student
Her research work involves the perception of the principal hydrolytic enzymes participating during anaerobic digestion, as well as their protein profile and proteomic analyses and the changes occurring in them when there is a change in the conditions.

Karen Abigail Avendaño Arellano

She forms part of Biorem Lab but is doing her thesis project in Instituto Potosino de Investigacion Cientifica y Tecnologica in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. She is actually work with the potential of humic substances to mitigate global warming gases.

Currently he is working in the evaluation of the competition between methanogens and sulfate reducing bacteria in anaerobio digestion employing different operational parameters to explain how these operational conditions can change reactory performances.
María José Castro Alonso

María José's project comprises the isolation and employment of the mechanisms used for some bacteria to yield bioconcrete which is used in building to reduce the negative environmental effects generated during the elaboration of conventional concrete.

Vanesa Ochoa Bañuelos
Bachelor's student
Actually she is working with the effect of arsenic in plants of cucurbitaceae family such as cucumber, watermelon and mekin because the 2 last are an importante crop from the Comarca Lagunera which alarming concentrations in water. The objetive is analyse the expression of the proteins with an specific domain under arsenic stress.

Cristina Delgado Chávez

Currently she is working u rge analysis and identification of candidate genes related to arsenic tolerance in Arabidopsis using genome-wide association mapping. This with the main purpose of broadening knowledge about the genes that could be helpful for phytoremediaton.

Armando Pacheco Valenciana

Actually his work is going to be based on the elucidation gene of the expression of bacteria in soil contaminated with arsenic, quantifying the genes that can oxidase and reduce arsenic.

Biotechnologist engineering from Universidad Politecnica de Gómez Palacio interested in microbiology of anaerobic digestion,experience in design, operation and start of biodigesters at fields scale. Inty is currently doing his Ph.D. in West Virginia University.

Aldo Ricardo Almeida Robles

He began his research activity in the Biorem lab where he studied the biochemical methane potential of desert plants for anaerobic digestion. Later on for his Master’s degree he started to direct his focus to gene identification. He moved to Dr. Umesh Reddy’s lab, at West Virginia State University. He continued in the plant field at the University of Copenhagen as candidate for a Ph.D.

Sarahi Garcia
Ph.D.
She was the first biorem student in 2007. Dr. Sarahi completed her Ph.D. at Stockholm University in Sweden. She is an Associated Professor at Stockholm Univerisity and her research focuses on microbial interactions in aquatic environments.
